An assessment was conducted in Gubadley District, Banadir Region, to identify orphan children living in vulnerable circumstances and better understand their living conditions, challenges, and priority needs. The assessment focused on children who have lost one or both parents and who may require additional support to access essential services and maintain their wellbeing.
The assessment highlighted several challenges affecting vulnerable orphan children and their caregivers, including limited access to education, food, healthcare, clothing, and other basic needs. Many children are being cared for by relatives or guardians who face economic difficulties and have limited resources to consistently meet household and child-specific needs. These circumstances can increase children’s vulnerability and affect their ability to access essential opportunities and services.
The assessment also identified the importance of providing education support, healthcare assistance, food and basic needs support, child protection services, and psychosocial support for vulnerable children. Supporting caregivers through livelihood opportunities and other household-level interventions can also contribute to creating a more stable and supportive environment for orphan children.
The assessment provides an important foundation for future interventions aimed at supporting vulnerable children in Gubadley District. The findings will help inform engagement with government institutions, humanitarian and development partners, donors, and other stakeholders to mobilize appropriate assistance and strengthen support mechanisms for orphan children and their caregivers.
